Preparing a Discreet Ostomy Care Kit

A small, familiar care kit can make work, travel and everyday plans feel easier to manage. It does not need to contain every accessory available. The most useful kit is one that reflects your own pouching routine and the guidance of your ostomy care team.

Start with the essentials you already use

  • Your usual pouch or pouching system, with a small number of spares.
  • Disposal bags.
  • Soft dry wipes or the cleansing materials recommended for your routine.
  • A measuring guide and template if your stoma is still changing or you do not use a pre-cut opening.
  • Any accessory that is already part of your established routine.

If you cut barriers yourself, prepare them at home when practical. If scissors are necessary, carry them safely and check transport rules before air travel.

Add a few practical backups

A change of underwear or light clothing, tissues, hand-cleaning supplies and your care-team contact details may be useful. Some people also keep a short written list of their usual products and sizes so a replacement can be identified more easily.

Avoid adding unfamiliar products “just in case”. Trying several new items at once can make it harder to understand what is helping or causing a problem.

Pack for access, not just capacity

Choose a discreet bag that opens easily and keeps clean items separate from used supplies. Grouping items in the order you use them can make a change calmer and faster. Check the kit regularly so expired, damaged or missing items can be replaced.

Store products carefully

Follow the storage instructions supplied with each product. As a general precaution, keep pouching supplies away from temperature extremes, direct sunlight and excessive humidity. Do not leave the kit in a hot car for long periods.

Before a longer day or trip

  1. Check that the pouching system is secure and comfortable.
  2. Confirm that the kit contains the products and sizes you currently use.
  3. Know where you could access a private washroom if needed.
  4. Keep important supplies in hand luggage when travelling.
  5. Ask your ostomy care team for individual travel advice if your routine is still changing.

This checklist is general information. Your personal kit should follow your own care plan and the instructions for your products.
