Understanding the Role of Common Ostomy Accessories

Ostomy accessories can help solve specific fit, skin or removal problems, but they are not automatically required with every pouching system. A simpler routine is often easier to repeat, so an accessory should have a clear purpose and be reviewed if it is not helping.

Product instructions vary. Before adding an accessory, check compatibility with your pouching system and discuss persistent leakage or skin concerns with an ostomy care professional.

Barrier rings and seals

A mouldable ring or seal may help fill dips, creases or uneven contours around the stoma. It can support a closer seal where a flat barrier alone does not sit evenly. It does not replace correct sizing or an appropriate pouching system.

Stoma paste

Paste is generally used as a filler for small gaps and creases; it is not a glue. Using too much can make removal and cleaning more difficult. Follow the product instructions and allow for any recommended setting time.

Stoma powder

Powder may be recommended for certain moist or damaged areas of peristomal skin so a barrier can adhere more effectively. Excess powder should not remain loose under the barrier. Because ongoing skin damage needs assessment, persistent redness, pain, wetness or broken skin should be reviewed by a professional.

Barrier films and wipes

A barrier film can form a thin protective layer between the skin and adhesive. It generally needs to dry before the pouching system is applied. Some products may affect adhesion or may not be needed with every routine, so use only what has a defined role.

Adhesive removers

An adhesive remover may help the barrier lift more gently and reduce pulling on the skin. Follow the instructions on whether residue needs to be removed or the skin needs to dry before applying the next pouch.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Check the size and fit of the pouching system first.
  2. Make sure the skin is clean and dry according to your care plan.
  3. Identify one specific problem the accessory is intended to address.
  4. Change one part of the routine at a time where possible.
  5. Record the result and ask for help if the problem returns.

Repeated leakage is not simply a signal to keep adding more products. Body contours, stoma shape, the barrier profile and application technique may all need review.
